When I Think of Research...

Although I have a better understanding of research, its importance, and its methods, I still find that it is not of interest to me. It was interesting to see how my simulation unfolded and developed. It was also interesting that I kept referencing certain aspects of the knowledge gained during my professional and personal time. (I had to choose 2 people to take a survey for a training and I instantly said, "See this is respect for persons- I'm asking you if you would like to be a part of this survey!" and I even informed them of the reason and purpose for it to ensure informed consent!) But over all- this is not a passion of mine.

My topic of play-based learning and how it supports children's interpersonal skills is an important phenomenon for early childhood professionals to know and understand. The information and knowledge gained can help them to provide the appropriate learning environment and teaching practices to ensure positive child outcomes. Children benefit through improved teaching practices and families benefit by understanding the importance of learning through play, building social connections at a younger age, and how they can help support and encourage social competence.

My perceptions of EC professionals as researchers was changed mostly due to the Virtual Lab School (VLS) training I attended for work. As they talked about the individuals behind the creation of the VLS modules and how they collected data and information and conducted studies- I realized that they too were researchers. These teachers, professors, students even, played a huge part in collecting the information, creating the modules, creating the website and it's interface, etc. etc. This course helped to support the change of perception and showed me that EC professionals can work towards helping to positively change the EC field and provide us with more research-based information, knowledge, and best practices.

  1. Hi Amy,
I agree with you that even though going through these 8 weeks practicing doing a research simulation, it is not a passion of mine. I understand that as a EC professional we can help advocate for change and be the expert of the field, but the actual research process is very analytical. Thank you for sharing your posts over the past few weeks, it has been a pleasure and very informative to follow your blog.

  2. Hi Amy,

I too am with you, I think that those that have a passion for research are a certain kind of person, one of which I am not afraid to admit, it's not for me. Possible over time, and getting to be more familiar with the process, it could be, but as of today, I am happy sitting on the floor with my littles. I really admire that you were able to use the information you gained in this course and relay it to a real life situation. I can't wait to do that. Keep up the good work, and I hope to work with you again soon.

  3. Hello Amy,
I am with you guys also that research is not a passion of mine. I did learn a great deal of information in this class but it was a struggle. Doctor Darett made it easier and explained a lot of new information to me. It was great working with him and everyone else in the class. It was great reading your discussion and blogs. I wish you the best of luck in your future classes and hope to see you soon.
